Can you do your past work? If your RFC (Residual Functional Capacity), the SSA's assessment of what you can still do physically and mentally despite your disability, allows you to perform any of your past jobs, the claim is denied at Step 4.

Can you do any work? If you can't do your past work, the SSA considers whether you could perform any other job in the national economy, factoring in your age, education, and work history. Denial at Step 5 means the SSA believes other jobs exist that you could perform.

1. Insufficient Medical Evidence

"Insufficient" doesn't always mean you lack records; it often means the records you submitted don't tell a complete story.

What the SSA specifically looks for: consistent treatment history with a licensed provider, clinical findings and test results (not just symptom descriptions), treating physician statements about your functional limitations, and documentation of how your condition affects your ability to sit, stand, walk, lift, concentrate, and maintain a schedule.

Step 1: Read and Understand Your Denial Letter

Don't skip this step. Before you do anything else, understand exactly what the SSA is saying and why. Identify the specific denial reason (as described in the section above). The strength of your appeal depends on directly addressing the SSA's stated grounds for denial, not just resubmitting the same documentation.

Step 2: Gather Stronger Medical Evidence

If your denial was based on insufficient medical evidence, the single most important thing you can do before filing your appeal is strengthen your medical record. That means:

Scheduling appointments with your treating physicians and asking them to document your functional limitations in writing.

Requesting that your doctor complete an RFC (Residual Functional Capacity) form describing what you can and cannot do physically and mentally.

Obtaining updated records from specialists, cardiologists, neurologists, orthopedic surgeons, and psychiatrists who have treated you in the past 12 months.

Getting copies of imaging studies, lab results, and operative reports that may not have been submitted with your original application.

Step 3: File Your Appeal Within 60 Days
