2. The oath. The judge enters, goes on the record, and swears in everyone who will testify.
3. Opening and the issues. The judge states the issues in your case, including your alleged onset date and the medical evidence in the file.
4. Your testimony. The judge asks you about your conditions, your treatment, your work history, and your daily activities. Your representative asks follow-up questions to fill gaps.
5. Expert testimony. A vocational expert (VE) testifies about the work a person with your limitations is still able to perform. A medical expert (ME) sometimes testifies about your conditions.
6. Cross-examination. Your representative questions the experts, testing the assumptions behind their opinions.
7. Closing. The judge closes the record or leaves it open for a short period to receive additional evidence.

You will not receive a decision at the hearing. The judge issues a written decision by mail, usually weeks to a few months later.

Who Will Be in the Room?

Fewer people attend a disability hearing than most claimants expect, and it is a hearing room, not a courtroom. The gathering is small and the tone is procedural rather than confrontational. Expect the following participants:

• The Administrative Law Judge (ALJ). The judge runs the hearing and decides your case.
• The hearing monitor. A staff member operates the recording and manages exhibits.

Work history and past job demands

The judge reviews the work you performed in the past 5 years and the physical and mental demands of those jobs. Be ready to explain how much you lifted, how long you stood, and the concentration each job required. This testimony feeds directly into the vocational expert's analysis.

Medical conditions, treatment, and symptoms

The judge asks about each condition, your treatment, your medications, and their side effects, so bring this detail clearly to mind before the hearing. Explain how your symptoms limit sitting, standing, lifting, focusing, or being around other people. What not to say

5. Practice describing a typical day. Specific, concrete detail beats general statements every time.
