Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)

SSDI is the federal insurance program funded by Social Security taxes you've paid throughout your career. To qualify, you must have worked long enough and recently enough to have sufficient work credits, and you must have a medically determinable impairment that prevents you from working for at least 12 months or that is expected to result in death.

The initial decision takes 3–6 months in California, handled by the state's Disability Determination Services (DDS) office. If denied, which happens to about 65% of initial applicants, you have the right to appeal. Each appeal adds time, which is why getting the initial application right matters.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

Step 1: Filing Your Application

Every level of appeal follows the same hard rule: 60 days from the date of the denial notice, plus a 5-day grace period for mailing. Miss that window and your claim is generally closed. The 60-day appeal deadline is the single most consequential date in any SSDI case. SSA calculates it from the date on the denial letter, not from when you received it, with a 5-day grace period for mail delivery assumed. That gives most claimants about 65 days in practice.

How Long Do Disability Benefits Last in California?

SSDI and SSI Duration

SSDI benefits don't have a set end date. They continue as long as you remain disabled and haven't reached full retirement age, at which point SSDI converts to retirement benefits at the same amount. The benefit doesn't drop.

SSA conducts periodic Continuing Disability Reviews (CDRs) to assess whether you still meet the disability standard. For most conditions, CDRs happen every 3–7 years. What Happens After You're Approved?

Approval is the goal, but it's not the end of the process. After SSA issues a favorable decision, there's still a sequence of steps before money arrives, and understanding that sequence prevents the anxiety of wondering why your bank account hasn't changed yet.

Step 1: Approval Notice — SSA sends a written approval letter (Decision Notice) by mail, typically within 1–2 weeks of the decision. A separate Award Notice may arrive in one to two months. This letter includes your benefit amount, back pay calculation, and your Medicare eligibility date.

Step 2: Back Pay Review — SSA reviews your case to calculate your back pay, the benefits owed from your established onset date (or your five-month waiting period end date for SSDI). If your attorney has a fee agreement on file, SSA withholds up to 25% (capped at $9,200) before releasing the remainder to you. This review typically takes 30–90 days.

Step 3: First Payment — For SSDI, your first regular monthly payment arrives within 1–3 months of approval, depending on your payment date and when the case was processed. Back pay arrives separately, often as a lump sum direct deposit. For SSI, payments typically begin within 30–60 days.

Step 4: Medicare Enrollment (SSDI) — If approved for SSDI, your Medicare coverage begins after a 24-month waiting period from your disability onset date, not your approval date. In many cases, some or all of that waiting period has already passed by the time you receive your approval. Your Award Notice will tell you your exact Medicare start date.

SSI Reinstatement Timeline

If you previously received SSI and your benefits stopped, because your income temporarily exceeded the limit, because you didn't respond to a CDR, or for another reason, you may qualify for expedited reinstatement rather than filing a new application from scratch.

Expedited reinstatement allows former SSI recipients to request reinstatement within 60 months of when their benefits ended, without going through the full application process. SSA can provide provisional SSI payments for up to 6 months while reviewing the reinstatement request.

The timeline for expedited reinstatement is typically 3–6 months, compared to 3–6 months for a new application, similar in time but with the advantage of provisional payments while you wait.
